Windows Explorer crashes when opening folders

The error I get is "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and
needs to close. We are sorry for this inconvenience. Please tell
Microsoft...."
After acknowledging that, all applications get shut down and I'm back
at the desktop. This happens when I drop down through several
subdirectories, although not always at the same level, nor every time.
If I want to attach a file to an email in OutlookExpress, this will
also cause a crash, although without the error message, just an abrupt
return to my desktop.

ScanDisk was OK. VirusScan found "Exploit-ByteVerify" and I deleted
the guilty file called "WebCounter.jar-645176f1-7f1c5887.zip".

Internet Explorer and other applications work fine. Just Windows
Explorer that keeps crashing. Any ideas?
Thanks. Jim

No ideas, but Internet Explorer began doing the same
thing to me last night. Eventually a box appears giving a
link to a site where internet explorer updates can be
downloaded, but when I try to access it, I get the box
telling me that it's got to shut down....and I can't get
past it to download something that might fix it. Larry

There was a note a while back that Win XP SP 2 was going to take care of
that. Dunno when though.

Does it to me too!

Look up ths virus and ensure it is removed. If it is, you should
reinstall Internet Explorer.

How old is your actual copy of VirusScan? You are running XP? And you've
installed the latest security updates at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com?

According to Mcafee, the answers are as follows:

1. Is the virus removed? No.

Please follow these instructions to disable system restore and scan again.
http://vil.nai.com/vil/SystemHelpDocs/DisableSysRestore.htm

Next, visit http://www.sun.com/getjava for the latest JVM update from
Sun Microsystems--the authority on Java and Java security.

Good Luck.

P.S You can also go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and update the
Microsoft Java VM but Sun is more current and easier to install on a
machine that might have problems obtaining the patch.
P.P.S The reason safe mode works is because Active Desktop is disabled
in safe mode. search this newsgroup for "Active Desktop" for more
information.

My saga continues...
DELL walked me through the process of re-partitioning my hard drive
and reinstalling Windows XP. When I was reloading the WorksSuite
software (Word, etc) the loading from CD eventually hung. Dell told me
to reinsert the CD...had to do that 3 times. Hmm. Very flakey so far.
Anyways, that didn't work as Windows didn't work that well
yet...Windows Explorer would crash, system would hang when trying to
close various applications. Even cntrl-alt-del didn't bring up the
task manager.
I called DELL back and they said I should have run -debug before
reinstalling windows to make sure the disk was totally clean. I had to
enter a bunch of commands like "mov xa200" to "clean" the system.

Well, the reloading of Word, etc worked flawlessly this time, but now
Virusscan8 was catching W32/Gaobot.worm.gen.d. How could that be? It
wasn't there before. Now I've done a clean boot with my brand new
untouched XP and application disks and now the virus was on my
computer. Computer is still acting up. I think I hear the hard drive
spinning once in a while, and somethimes I cant even close various
applications.
How can I make sure my computer is virus free? Starting with the
repartitioned drive didn't work. Also, why doesn't McAfee VirusScan
(up to date) prevent the virus/trojan/worm from getting onto my
computer in the first place?

A worm can spread without a user doing anything. A piece of software
called a firewall can block worms. Are you running Windows XP?

Please visit http://www.microsoft.com/security to enable the firewall.
then, update your antivirus software and scan your disk just in case.

If you are not running Windows XP, you should purchase a copy of
Zonealarm Plus (that way you get bug fixes really fast, and technical
support.) This is a good idea even if you are running Windows XP, since
it is a better firewall than the one inside Windows.

http://www.zonelabs.com

If you really cannot afford Zonealarm Pro, I reccomend Sygate Personal
Firewall.

go to http://smb.sygate.com
click on products
click on "sygate personal firewall" not PRO (which again costs money)

It does not have the ease of use that Zonealarm products do.

It is also possible the free version of zonealarm will work fine on your
computer, but I've had mixed results.

I hope this helps.

I left IE a long time ago because it stinks so much. I use Netscape and
Mozilla (depends on if I need AIM or not). I have also used Opera, but
it has some quirks that are really irritating.

I have found this to be a problem in many systems that have been upated to
XP SP1, regardless of hardware configuration. It took me about six months
looking for and asking for remedies and I have found that a forthcoming
patch in the SP 2 answered my delimma. Click on
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;329692&Product=winxp
#appliesto, scroll down and read what this patch does and click Duser.dll to
download the patch.
