Windows Explorer crashes: "The memory could not be written"

Lately I have had intermittent crashes of the Windows Explorer with an error
message
"The instructions at ... referenced memory at ... The memory could not be
written"
where the ellipses stand for some hex numbers.
Any ideas as to the cause would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Thanks for your thoughts. -- No, the memory is oaky. (I had tested that
already.) The crash only occurs with Windows Explorer. (If it were a memory
problem, it would occur for whatever application accesses the faulty memory
area.) Any more thoughts, anyone?

Ok, so now you need to find a config in which it doesn't happen ..

try a different userID
try safe-mode.
If it won't fail in safe mode, try normal mode with all startup items
turned off, or all the non-MS services not loaded.

You need to find a configuration 'X' in which it doesn't happen, and
then reduce the difference between X and 'normal' until the cause is
isolated.
(Or you can just go for the 'big bang' approach and do a repair
install).

You mention 'lately' .. so when did it start, and what did you do jsut
before that?
