Windows Explorer consuming too much system resource

Hello
My Desktop which has 256 SD RAM has Win XP pro and it consumes too much
resources. The taskmanager shows that it consumes about 29000 K memory
when I am not running any application. There is abnormal diskactivity. At
every other second the led showing disk activity is lit for about a
second.
My laptop's Windows Explorer consumes only about 10000 K. What could
possibly cause this?
How can I check the real reason?
Thanks in advance

Make sure the computer is virus/malware-free:

If the computer is clean, do clean-boot troubleshooting:

You also don't really have enough RAM in that machine. Adding at least
another 256MB of memory would be a good idea. Make sure you check your
motherboard/computer manual and get the correct memory. Crucial has a
good memory chooser at www.crucial.com.

Additionally, check to see if Indexer Service is turned on. Did you install
the new Desktop Search ... which has it's own indexer.

Also, you get download FileMon or RegMon from www.sysinternals.com , and
just watch what's going on to see.

Finally, start Task Manager and add two additional columns (under View) ...
CPU TIME and Write I/O bytes or anything else you want. Then sort the
column from high to low to see who's grabbing what.
