Windows Explorer and ZIP Files

In Windows Explorer in XP (Pro), ZIP files are shown in the Folder pane on
the left, as if they're folders (with a + to expand and view contents). Is
there any way to turn off this behavior?

Thanks for any help,
Steve

Yes, run this command:

regsvr32 /u %systemroot%\system32\zipfldr.dll

It should tell you that unregistering succeeded and will no longer do that.

Thank you very much, Alec!!

BTW, where did you find that kind of info? It sure seems obscure.

NP.

I first encountered ZIP Folders in Windows 98SE. I liked it (it was novel at the time) and wrote a program to install the feature
on other versions of Window which did not have it. Eventually, I got tired of it and killed it off. When XP came with it
pre-installed and enabled, I immediately knew where to look, and disabled it.

Others figured out how to disable it as well and soon there were (and still are) plenty of pages, that discuss this; obviously there
are lots of (most?) people who don't like it's functionality. I believe the main complaint about it is that it causes the
File/Folder search function of Windows (which is garbage anyway) to also search inside ZIP files. That's why the solution started
springing up in the first place-most pages that show how to do this put it under the heading "how to stop Windows from searching
inside ZIP files".

infact if you just search for "zip"
the first match is the one you needed

A little cryptic, but it does look like an interesting site worth more
look-see.

If you unload zipfldr.dll, what happens to XP-zipped files/folders? Will
you lose the ability to use them?

I'd rather not experiment to find out if you know off the top of your head.

What do you mean? Are you asking if you will no longer be able to use ZIP files you created with ZIP Folders?

Windows' ZIP Folders creates standard ZIP files. Therefore any program that can read/write ZIP files can use them. Of course you
will not be able to use ZIP Folders to read/write them anymore if you unregister the DLL, but if you've got another program (WinZIP,
WinRAR, etc.) then you can use those instead.

But then, how do you set WinZip, for example, to open all *.zip
folderrs by default? Get WinZip right-click context menus? AND get
the "Send to Compressed Folder" right-click to create a new WinZip
file?

Awaiting your responses with baited breath, I remain, yours truly,

Look in the options/settings/preferences. There should be an option to integrate/associate ZIP files with the program.
