Windows Explorer and related processes use 100% of CPU

G

Every time I click either on windows explorer, any folder on the desktop, or try open Control Panel, they do not open and instead of it my explorer.exe gets up to 100% CPU, making impssible to work. I can however open Task Manager and use it or shut down the computer. I can kill explorer.exe then in Task Manager (disappearing taskbar, etc.) and then when I start it again (from Task Manager) all is back to normal, unless I try again to open any application mentioned above, all related to explorer, and the whole thing starts again. Very enjoying, as I have to use other programs for files browsing………..and can not access Control Panel (is there an other way, by the way?) This happened roughly after I did these operations - defragmented C: drive, installed some "necessary" MS Windows patches, browsed the Internet….I have the newest, updated Norton Antivirus, always on, run the scan on the whole computer, no viruses, run Lavasoft Ad-aware removed all staff, restoring to the previous point also does not help……………I don't know what to do. I don't want to reinstall windows, as this is a pain (done it already several times), but this time I have so much stuff I need, all updated to the latest versions, with all upgrades and patches, that it's almost impossible to reinstall it all. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi, przemekjab.

Have you tried the System File Checker? At the Run prompt, type: sfc
/scannow

SFC will compare each WinXP operating system file to the "known good" copy
held in your on-disk cache and replace any missing or damaged ones.

But you said, "I don't want to reinstall windows, as this is a pain (done it
already several times)". Reinstalling is even more thorough than SFC and
should have fixed any problems that SFC would fix.

If you DO decide to reinstall WinXP again, be sure to check Microsoft's
instructions for an "in-place upgrade". This will reinstall WinXP, but
preserve the Registry, so that it does not wipe out your existing
applications and data. It's as much "a pain" as a full reinstall for WinXP
itself - and you still must visit Windows Update, after getting your
firewall and antivirus back in place, to get the latest SP and later
hotfixes - but it does avoid the pain of reinstalling the apps. See this KB
article:
How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;q315341

But all this should not be necessary. If these symptoms keep coming back
after all this, you need to look in some other direction for the problem.
Have you tested your RAM? Your other hardware? Connections and cables?

When I asked Google to search the KB site for "explorer+cpu", I got over 300
hits. You can start with this one and then ask Google to find the others
with "Search site":
Explorer.exe Process Uses Many CPU Cycles When Windows Is Idle

Thought I'd try this solution to find a missing mixer.exe file which "came
and went" - followed yr instns (Start/Run sfc/scannow) - one quick flash of
what appeared to be a black DOS screen. Nothing apparently happened.
Am I missing something ?

As far as I can tell, mixer.exe is not a Windows file. The name sounds like
something that would install with drivers/software for sound hardware or
possibly one of the multimedia player programs.

The good news, when SFC finishes so fast that it is just a flash it means
your core Windows files are in good shape. If you want more to look at when
running this tool, open the Command Prompt window first (Start> Run> CMD).
Then type the SFC command into it:
sfc /scannow
(single space before the forward slash)

Sharon - bless you! I now know how to get to a DOS command prompt ! Helps
enormously.
and yes, "mixer.exe" is associated with the sound card/driver - know anyone
who specialises in help on that one ? Downloaded a updated driver as advised
in MSUpdate - "mixer" was superb, worked just fine, had mike boost..
Unfortunately it went walkabout next boot-up (loaded the "old" one, no mike
boost), can NOT get it back despite major effort over 2 weeks now both with
MS and Soundcard Chip site. HELP !!

If you have a voice capable modem, you might want to check out:

Not sure if my modem is voice-capable - it's a Teryon TJ210 cable modem
supplied by NTL, with instructions how to connect and not much else.

Went to the link, seems to be some form of telephone device ? But I got a
run-time error (perhaps because I've got Spybot stopping cookies ?) Debug
came to a halt just after a script line including a cookie reference.

Before proceeding further, why do you suggest I go here ?

Cable modems are not voice capable, in the sense we're talking here. The type of modem we're referring to is a standard dial up modem, with the extra bits to enable it to act as a telephone.

Hi RC

Thanks for your help. I run it, took several minutes, and also program stopped several times asking to insert MS Windows CD, funny as this CD was always in (has it something to do that I had already SP installed)? Eventually it finished (without any message..........), I opened a folder afterwards and..............................................no change..........explroer exploded again!

Doug, I upgraded cable, few years ago. The benefits of cable far outweigh
the vaguaries of dial-up (in UK anyway) so I'll stick with it, and lose out
on potential telephony capability ... but thanks for the thought - it COUL:D
have been possible !
Sincerely, Len

Hi, przemekjab.

Sorry about that. As I said, rather than simply continue the
re-install/recycle and similar fixes which don't work, it may be time to
consider hardware and other possible causes. :>(

There may be some bomb that explodes each time a particular spot on the HD
is touched? I don't know; I'm clutching at straws. But, since a complete
reinstall doesn't fix it, chances are that the problem is somewhere in your
unique computer's hardware, not anywhere in WinXP itself.
