Windows Explorer - Acting Strange

Hi,

I have a strange problem with Windows Explorer. I have a computer with Win
XP Home and my HDD is partitioned in two logical drives. When I double click
on the second drive D: letter in the right pane a new window pops up called
'Open with'. The options available in this window include Adobe Reader,
Word, Internet Explorer, Notepad etc but it does not include Windows
Explorer. The check box with the option "always use the selected program to
open this type of file" can not be selected as it is dimmed. If I browse
Windows Explorer in C:\windows the drive opens in a new window.

This does not happen when I click on the left pane of Windows Explorer nor
does it happen to the first logical drive c:.

I tried to change the default action from Tools - Folder Options - File
Types - Drive
The only options available on this pane are new and advanced. Delete an
Change are deselected (dimmed). In the advanced options the only action
available is - Find. I have not tried to add a new action with
c:\windows\explorer.exe (since I do not know the complete command)

I even tried reinstalling windows XP from the OEM Restoration Discs but the
problem continues.

Thanx in advance

The drive should not need any special actions?

What type of data do you have stored on the drive? Double clicking the drive should simply expand the folder tree.

Hi,

Explorer used to function pretty well and double clicking on the D Drive
icon used to expand the tree, but no longer. The data that I store is normal
stuff like office documents, music, jpeg images, acrobat files etc. Moreover,
all my data on D drive is in folders (it is basically my data drive).

When I double click on any other icon on the left or right pane in Windows
Explorer it results is the tree expanding. Even when I double click on the d
dive icon on the left pane it expands the tree. The only time it does not
expand the tree is when I double click the icon for d drive on the right pane
(i does not matter if i choose the explore or open options, it results in the
same behaviour).

This does not happen to any other drive (C Drive, the DVD Drive or other Pen
drives) However, the same phenomenon took place when I connected a Digital
Camera with a memory stick (SD RAM), that particular drive displayed the same
problems. In order to confirm if the problem was reproduceable as any logical
drive (F:, G: etc) I reconnected the drive after reformating the disc and the
problem disappeared! (This happened just now, while I was writting this reply)

I have a 100 GB Disc partitioned in two logical drives. The D Drive is 45.22
GB with 16.8 GB (37 %) free space and 28.4 GB of data. I have regularly
cleaned the disc and defragmented it. C: Drive is a FAT 32 Partition and D
Drive is a NTFS partition.

The whole thing started after i had a virus attack. I was working with
Office 2007 Beta and had installed the BTR 2. After the installation of BTR
2 I could not open any office files that had been previously created. The
only way in which I could open them was by disabling the Norton AV Office
Plugin (updating Norton AV did not help). With five days I had a
trojan/virus. I do not remember if this problem took place after I cleaned
up the computer or if it existed before but in any case I could not get back
to the original state even after reloading windows from the OEM provided
Restoration Disc and this problem definitely did not exist before the virus
attack.

Otherwise the computer is function well. I now have a firewall, Norton AV
and Lavasoft Adaware none of them nor other diagnostic software (Dr Watson,
Registry Fix, etc) have detected any viruses, problems.

I am truely stumped...

Thankyou for your prompt reply,

Hi,

I removed all the data from the hard drive and formatted it. Thereafter it
was working absolutely fine. However, I was not able to find out why it
happened. ANy way thanks everybody.

Prem Reuben
