VISTA seems to insist that I use a mail system that is foreign to me. I do
not have the server name etc asked for.

Let me know if I should buy a MAC?

Who provides your email account? They should have instructions on how to
enter their server names into whichever email program you wish to use.

You'd have to do the same on a Mac.
