Ok, this one's tough...
WindowsXP Pro won't recognize any media in any removable media drives
unless it's there before Windows boots up. In other words, if I have a cd in
the cd drive when I start up the computer, when I log on windows will see the
drive and everything that's on it. However, if I startup the system and log
on, then put a cd in in the drive, Windows won't recognize the cd. You can
see the drives under "My Computer", but when you click on one it says "D
drive inaccessible". With the other cd drive it simply allows you to open
the window but it's showing empty. I have this problem with the CDRW, the
DVD, 1.44 floppy, and the digital camera.
I have already gotten all the latest updates for windows. I have also
updated to the latest cmos data. The device manager says everything is there
and working properly. I've tried re-installing drives w/out success. When I
boot directly into DOS mode before allowing Windows to start up, I can access
the cd, dvd, and floppy drives normally, I can read from any disk I put into
any drive. I'm assuming this means that it's something in the OS that isn't
working properly. This problem started after 2 years of trouble-free
operation. I suppose it could be something in an automatic update that threw
it all out of wack, but I don't think it's likely.
One final note. I bought a new HD and did a fresh install of XP on that
drive (after unplugging the old one). I went online and got all the latest
updates from windows (thanks to my cable modem). I still had the same
problem. The only thing that I haven't tried yet (that I can think of) is to
wipe the HD and start over, only this time avoid getting the updates until
I've tested to see if the problem still exists. Thanks for any help you may
have.
