Windows Disk Defragmenter and Windows XP Shutdown

I was running Windows Disk Defragmenter when Power Schemes turned off the
monitor while Disk Defragmenter was running. I left the computer, and came
back and mistakenly thought the computer was in standby mode, and hit the
power off button. But don't know if Defragmenter completed or not when I
did this. The system shut down, and I rebooted the computer. Did I hurt
anything by possibly interrupting the Disk Defragmenter program when I shut
the computer off?

In XP, when the power is shut down by pusing the power off button, is data
saved, and any programs running shut down automatically?

thanks, Kevin

Are you seeing any problems at the moment? It is possible there was some
damage. Backup all essential data, then run a chkdsk /f.

If the power button is pressed the computer turns off. XP does not save
anything, or shut down programs gracefully.

Kevin,

Shouldn't be any problems. All defragmenters use the same operating system
calls to defragment. These operating system calls are designed so that
there should be no file system corruption in the event of an abnormal
shutdown of Windows (or power off).
