I'm not a computer expert by any means but I believe this is normal.

Did you recently install Windows Live Messenger or Windows Live Mail?

That's the reason it's happening and even if you uninstall them both, it
will continue to happen. If you look at the results of the analysis of
your drive, you will see it's only one file so don't worry about it.
You'd think that Microsoft could figure out how to make their own
programs play nice with Windows, especially Live Messenger which
everyone and their brother just *has* to have.

Perhaps not normal, but my computer has been doing exactly that since XP
came out.

The only one of mine that does that is one that I stupidly installed
Windows Live Messenger on and that will be removed with a reformat and
reinstall as I need a bigger hard drive with a bigger C partition for
that computer.

I never installed Windows Live Messenger. My hard drive is 120 Gigs with
about 13 used.

Does the report from analyzing the hard disk tell you which file it
can't defrag? You may need to do it in Safe Mode for it to tell you.
Have you installed Windows Live Mail?

Files that are "in use" cannot be defragged ( no matter what type or what
program they are from ),as long as your computer is on their will always be
files in use, just ignore the msg.

If you have installed Windows Live Messenger or Windows Live Mail, it
will do the same trip in safe mode where nothing is running. Those are
the culprits. Period.

Wrong, I don't have either of those installed and it does it. There is
nothing "wrong" here. Like someone else said, if the files are in use,
they can't be defragged. One of the biggest culprits tends to be the
swap file. I tend to shut my swap file off before defragging and then
turn it back on after I'm done. That helps some. However, there are
times when files won't defrag, its nothing to worry about. Its also not
caused by something you have installed.

Sure. I have a computer that has *never* had a problem defragging in
over four years. I put Windows Live Messenger on it and it immediately
had the problem. I removed WLM and the problem didn't go away. I
reformatted and reinstalled XP and it defrags perfectly every time. You
must have some program doing the same thing as WLM does. But, hey, it's
your computer so don't listen to reason and do what you like!

That said, you do disable your AV scanner before defragging, right?
