windows did not start successfully

My xp home system on a dell inspiron 3800 wont restart.

It keeps returning to the "Windows did not start
successfully" information, and each option listed there
returns the machine to this information again. System
Restore does not work from this point on my machine in
this situation.

I have booted the machine from CD and have run Recovery
Console. But I'm not sure what to do next. I guess I
need to work out the error before fixing it?

I have run CHKDSK and it has found errors on the hard
drive - not sure what to do next.

I'm now reparing the OS using the XP Home install
function. Hopefully this will work.
