Windows Desktop

I have Win XP fully up-to-date.

Just recently, after I've been using proprietary software,

and return to the desktop, all the icons (most of which are shortcuts) show
as the plain default page image.

Then, over a period of 10 - 20 seconds they revert to their proper form,
specific to their associated software -

eg My computer changes from the page icon to the recognised PC tower and
monitor.

This phenomenon does not appear to be associated with the use of a
particular proprietary program,

nor any other specific event or action that I am aware of.

Any ideas would be welcome.
