Desktop Icons

I run Win XP fully up to date.

Sometimes after using proprietary software then closing it to reveal the
desktop,

the desktop icons have reverted to the basic type, like a page image.

Then over a period of 10 - 15 seconds they return to their correct program
specific form.

I cannot associate this with the use of particular software or other event.

It started suddenly and the frequency of the phenomenon is fairly constant.

Any ideas would be welcome

Hi Don,

Sometimes this delay can be caused by inadequate display cards (with
shared memory), a slow CPU or insufficient RAM, or a program that is
demanding high CPU usage. Look at Task Manager when you are running
that "proprietary software" and see what it's CPU demands are
(Ctrl-Alt-Del, Task Manager button).

Another remote possibility would be you have been infected with malware
and it is running in the background using up your computer resources.

Your icon cache is probably corrupt, you can rebuild it either
automatically by installing Iconoid or manually using TweakUI
(install, open, under "Repair" select "Rebuild Icons" and click
the "Repair Now" button)
