windows desktop short cut file names

I have several shortcuts on my computers desktop. For example I have a
shortcut for 'Microsoft Office Word 2003.' but on the desktop it truncates (
or shortens) the shortcut name to ' Microsoft Ofice W....' When I click on
the icon I can view the entire shortcut name, but after a little while the
name gets shorten again. Is there a way I can make all my shortcuts display
the entire file name all the time even if the file name is a bit lengthly?
(i dont want to rename the files to shorter names)

Change the icon size to a smaller one. Consider shortening the name to MS
Word 2003. Change the icon size in the Display applet, appearance,
advanced.

Right click the icon and choose Rename.

the whole point of my question is to see if there is an alternative besides
shortening the names. i tried using your suggetion of changing the icon (
and font) size of the desktop icon but that didnt work. thanks for the help
though. i appreciate your time.

It's done this way to save on memory. Desktop icon can use up allot of
memory.

You may be able to hack the register to change this setting. Maybe on of the
registry gurus can chime in here and tell you how to do it.

Having longer names on the desktop icons does not use up "allot [sic] of
memory". The reason the OP can't see the names is because he apparently
wants names longer than the horizontal icon space allows. He will either
need to adjust the amount of space the icons take up, make the fonts very
small, or rename them to something useful but shorter. No matter what he
does, memory usage will not be affected.

You can make the icon font smaller so more fits on one line. Right-click on
the desktop. choose "Properties," go to the "Appearance" tab, and click
"Advanced." Select "Icon" from the "Item" list and change the font size.

But I wouldn't choose to do that. That just makes it harder to read. Instead
I would change the name of ."'Microsoft Office Word 2003" to just "Word,"
and so on. Since it's likely that you call it "Word," rather than
"'Microsoft Office Word 2003," that, in my view, makes it *easier* to read.
