Windows Desktop Search

I installed the XP SP3 last week, and chose to install Windows Desktop
Search.

When I sit down at my computer, I hear a near constant hum of the hard
drive, and it appeart to still be indexing my hard drive.

When I click on the Indexing Options, I see a counter of items indexed,
which is counting down (does that make any sense at all), currently at over
84,000.

I really have not found too much in the newsgroups about Desktop Search, so
am considering uninstalling that application (can I even do that?).

You might as well either let it index (leave the PC alone for a long time)
or uninstall it. You should be able to find it in the add/remove programs
applet of your control panel.

I have found that, in my experience, it is best to have installed that
critter right after installing the OS. The few times I have tried it after
waiting any time and installing stuff, adding stuff, accumulating email,
etc. have all resulted in it bogging the PC down for days and days and maybe
even more days.

Now I realize what was happening.

I had just finished deleting about 500Meg worth of old Outlook messages, so
it was going back through the index and removing references to those items.
That is why the number of indexed items was counting down.

My searching needs are neither so frequent nor so demanding that I want to
install another resident app or service, let alone one that indexes every
file and exhibits the behaviour you describe. I'm more than happy with the
performance of Agent Ransack (http://www.mythicsoft.com/agentransack/), a
freeware searching tool that easily outstrips Windows' Search module and
doesn't index anything.

Just my tuppence'-worth!

Thanks.

Does it eventually help speed up searches?

Dale

Eventually. It is sort of like those people who will spend 12 hours tweaking
their computer for a faster start time shaving off .05 seconds each time
they boot. Me? I just hibernate or leave it on.

Appreciate the comments.

I didn't intentionally install Desktop Search, and would agree that the
frequency and degree of my search needs (at least at home) is so low that
I'll probably delete this app. On the other hand, it does a really nice job
of searching Outlook messages. Especially when you have several PST files
of 800M each.
