May it work instead of Norton Antivirus? Does it defend against viruses?

You still need an antivirus product. Windows Defender is an anti spyware
application and will not protect you from a virus.

damn good one too!

No. I, for anti-virus I recommend AVG, there's a free version available at:

I highly recommend it over Norton Anti-Virus. Avast (also has a free
version) is also popular around here too, and NOD32 if you want a commercial
AV program.

I have increasingly shifted my clients from NAV to NOD32 (which works
on 64 bit and 32 bit Vista as well as earlier OS versions).

I installed Norton Internet Security 2007 with excellent results. I removed
Windows OneCare first.

I gave up on Symantec when the screwed up Norton Utilities. Then they
bought out PC Tools and screwed that up, too.

Oh Peter Norton, where are you?

Symantec bought Norton and turned it into buggy bloatware winch got
more buggy and more bloated every year.

Then they buy products like Quarterdeck CleanSweep and ignore them.

Come to think of it, what *does* Symantec start from scratch?

Oh and then there was that free firewall (I forget the name) I was
using for several years till Symantec bought the company and
discontinued said firewall.....

Symantec can shove it.

That was a great rule in the good old text days. But who wants to read
