Windows Defender

For some reason windows defender will not get the definitions version
automactically. To get the definitions I have to start windows updates to
download them. Is there a fix for this problem it would be great if it would
do this on it's own. I am on a network with a ISA server for the Internet to
come through. I have windows update turned off but I can run it because I am
the admin to the network this way I control the updates on the network. I do
not know much about the ISA server part. I have windows defender at home
works fine.

Windows Defender gets its updates via AutoUpdate. If you are restricting
this on your network, it won't update within the program--you'll need to go
manually to Windows Update.

It can update via WSUS if you configure WSUS to carry the updates.
