Windows defender unable to complete the update: 0x80072efd

I just installed Windows Defender (Beta 2) and I get an error message when I
press "Check for Updates" next to "Windows Defender definitions haven't been
updated in 26 days.

Error message:
Windows defender unable to complete the update: 0x80072efd

I notice in the WindowsUpdate.log file that my computer tries to connect to
a server on our local network and fails.

Is there any workaround available so I can bypass policy settings and use
the default windows update servers instead?

Hi

Talk with your IT Dept !

Maybe they allows you to run Betas within your companys network and
maybe admin also publish definitions from the WSUS server.

Otherwise this will be a total mess.

If you have WSUS available on your network, Windows Defender expects the
signature updates to come from there. A new class of updates was made
available on January 16th, but the administrator needs to make some
change--not sure exactly the right terminology--to authorize them and get
them available via the server.
