Windows Defender

When launching Windows Defender, I receive the following message
"Application failed to install 0x800106ba. A problem caused Windows Defender
service to stop"
What's Wrong?
Should I scan remotely the whole computer with an anti-virus? to get away of
any local malfunction)
Thanks

Hey, I'm just jumping in here because I see no other way to pose a question.
(I'm new at this...where is the link to pose your own question instead of
responding to another's question? )

Now for my real question: I use Spybot, ad-aware, and zone alarm firewall.
I have windows service pack 2 for XP. Will Windows Defender (Beta 2) work
for me in this environment (I'm worried about any possible conflict with my
non windows firewall; also wondering if Defender has anything to offer that
my other anti spys do not have. THanks for any direction you can give.

From my experience, running multiple spyware scanners is not a bad thing. They all seem to catch things the others miss. This may simply be the release of new definitions, or what each author/team considers spyware.

Windows Defender does not contain a firewall. However, the Windows Live OneCare suite does, and uses Windows Defender for its anti-spyware.

Thanks Ben. I will try Defender then. My ad-aware SE freebie has no real
time protection, Spy-bot has some. The spyware almost ruined my computer but
I reclaimed it The only tools I can afford are the free ones right now.
Thanks again.

I have been battling this 0x800106ba error message for a month now.
have both windows 2K and XP machines that I update. I think I hav
discovered the problem! I rebuilt a computer from scratch (no imaging
and loaded nothing but the operating system (2000) and SP4 - I did th
mandatory updates to MSIE 6.1, etc - just to make sure there wasn'
something else preventing the install. Defender still failed to loa
with the above error message. I found a copy of Defender from Februar
'06 and loaded that one. It loaded instantly and without error.
still had to get around the failure to update problem, but that ha
already been discussed in other messages. I think the newest versio
on MS's site and elsewhere is broken, because the copy I used fro
February with Revision number {DDAB37BD-C2AE-490A-9201-DCF0CDB2164A
doesn't cause the problem. Hope this can help everyone
