Windows Defender x64 definition update 1.14.1929.4
posted by Dobrin 12/8/2006 12:31 PM PST

My IT unit blocks normal updates for Windows Defender, and blocks direct
update of other MS updates that they don't push out. So I update Defender
manually from downloads posted to your web site.

I am running Win XP sp2. current up to, but not including this week's
patches.

OK--sorry for the misunderstanding. Since I use NNTP (a mail-based
mechanism) to connect to these groups, "page" confused me.

I would re-try the update. You need to get this one in, since it is a Full
update with an Engine upgrade---or successive updates will result in your
being out of synch on the Engine level until the next FE update.

If successive attempts fail, go to a command prompt in the Windows Defender
installation folder and do:

mpcmdrun -RemoveDefinitions -All

and then re-try updating--preferably using Engel's posts giving both the
Full and succeeding differential updates needed to get current from 1.0.0

I don't think that will work. Tried install several times. All normal
Microsoft updates, including Windows Update and Defender updates are blocked
by IT policy. As administrator for my pc, I can "install" software such as
manual updates I downloaded (ie, Defender). But this is considered a rogue
installation.

I think I will have to re-install the Defender software from scratch to
upgrade the engine.

I just wish MS would make it easier to get the profiles current after such
installs.
If I am downloading the software, I should also be able to easily and
optionally download a file with the full current profiles to go with it, as
Symantec lets me do.

I have the same issue if my PC were not connected to the internet, of which
we have a dozen here.

If you reinstall Defender, that will set the definitions back to 1.0.0, just
as the command line procedure I mention would.

Hello, newhavenr.
You should use updates from links I posted only if you run Windows Defender
on Windows XP x64 Edition. If you try to run update from links I posted on 32
bit Windows XP, it is normal to get "not a proper win32 application". For 32
bit Windows you should use updates from links posted by Engel.
