Definitions 1.14.1530.8 and engine 1.1.1508.0 available

Hi Bill,

Does this mpas-fe definition and engine update replace all previous updates?

Do the mpas-d updates then add cumulatively to this defs/engine update until
the next mpas-fe update is released?

The reason I ask is that I do need to perform manual WD updates for some
clients and it would be helpful to know which updates are needed and the
order they so be applied.

Kind Regards

Simon

Simon--you are correct that this is an important issue--we've already seen
one user in these groups with an oddity about their version numbers because
of non-sequential application of manual updates.

I'm afraid that I don't know this answer--and hadn't, in fact, even noticed
the naming convention difference that you've noted.

One way to test this out on, say, a Virtual PC testbed, would be to use the
mpcmdrun arguments that allow you to take updates back to 1.0.0, and see
whether a given update brings that situation to current.

I'm interested in this issue, but I don't have the answer, and I'm not sure
when I might get the time to do this testing.

FWIW, I did just blow Windows Defender back to 1.0.0 on my home machine. I
got some error messages, but pushed past them and did an update within the
program--if I am reading the log right, a single update is what was needed
to bring the machine current. I haven't positively identified that
update--it didn't need to do a new download--but I suspect it is this most
recent update including the engine update.

OK--having now looked at Engel's latest post with regards to a new
definition:

I propose the following meaning:

mpas-d = Delta definition update (i.e. just changes since the last full
update)
mpas-f = Full definition update
mpas-fe = Full definition update with engine update.

Will try these on as a working hypothesis as we proceed.

Hi Bill,

Thanks for your hard work on this.

I am suprised that I am the only one who has asked about this though! :)

Am I the only person upgrading PC's when offline and need to apply manual
updates?

From my experiences this week applying the last mpas-fe update seem to bring
a new install to the then current patch levels.

I note there is a new mpas-d update today so I will apply the mpas-fe first
and then mpas-d to see what happens.

The latest URL for mpas-d is:

http://au.download.windowsupdate.co..._00373941349ca1e41cdac637a17e11b7c8402f22.exe

The current versions on my copy of WD are:

Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1347.0
Engine Version: 1.1.1508.0
Definition Version: 1.14.1532.14

Kind Regards

Simon

You are not the only one interested--but I think you were first to spot the
notation.

We've had one post from someone who had managed to get to a current
definition level, but an older engine level, through applying delta to an
incorrect base, I believe--so understanding the notation and having a
current list of base and delta's needed is important.

Maybe Engel can add the base version to his posts?

Hi Engle, Bill et al,

Thanks for the information :) More than I asked for but then I did ask.

I would suggest that most folks would want to be on the latest Engine and
Signatures rather than mixing and matching.

On that basis perhaps a posting with the most recent mpas-fe, mpas-f and
mpas-d signatures would be very useful

All we then need is a tool to ensure they get applied in the correct order
onto the base installation.

I am sure that something can be wipped-up as a .CMD file or similar.

Once we have the correct order to apply the updates we will be good to go.

Kind Regards

Simon
