Windows Defender wont update!!

Although the other respondent in the thread provides evidence to the
contrary, I still tend to suspect simple timing issues. I do not believe
this message indicates a licensing issue on your system--unless perhaps it
has not yet been activated?

When you switched to manual, were other updates besides the definition
update offered, and did you install them? I'd encourage you to set back to
automatic now that updates have worked.

Hi !

I bought a computer with Vista Ultimate OEM.

A couple of days ago I recieved the error 0x80240029 which means my version
of Windows is a fake!? (BTW, Vista feels very much like a BETA product).

Windows Defender:
Windows Defender-version: 1.1.1505.0
Engineversion: 1.1.2101.0
Definitions: 1.15.2233.6

Again, I haven't seen Vista, so I don't know if the version number may be
different but here's what I have:

Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1593.0
Engine Version: 1.1.2101.0
Definition Version: 1.15.2233.6
Product ID: 81664-830-9262522-04101

The error code doesn't reflect an invalid operating system.

0x80240029 -2145124311 WU_E_INVALID_PRODUCT_LICENSE A product with an
invalid license was found on the system.

If your version is still 1.1.1505.0, I would recommend, with the previous
caveat not withstanding, that you remove Windows Defender and download the
current version from:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...E7-DA2B-4A6A-AFA4-F7F14E605A0D&displaylang=en

From that page:
Note: If you have version 1.1.1592.0, you must first manually uninstall
Windows Defender before you can install this newer version. To configure or
remove the existing version, use Add/Remove programs in the Control Panel.

Please give us an update when complete.

When I installed Vista, I activated it on day one. (February 1st).
I have installed Windows Genuine Tool, and downloaded files from Microsoft.

I have tried to search for updates for several days. With rebooting the OS
between days.

Only when I tried my workaround have I seen and been able to download
updates. The updates that were available then:

- Definition updates for Windows Defender
- Important update for Windows Vista
- Language files for Windows Vista Ultimate

I choose to install the first two. However, after a reboot I cannot no
longer see any updates (which should have been the language files, perhaps
those are only available when there are some other important update?).

I am so disappointed with Vista that I'm reinstalling XP SP2, and will not
look back until Vista SP1.

I tried to download the latest version of Defender, but upon install I get
the message: Windows Defender is a part of Vista and cannot be installed.

I try to remove it, but it's not listed in Add/Remove programs, nor in
Add/Remove Windows components.

I do not require any further help in this issue since I'm going to install
XP SP2.

Thanks anyway.

This is indeed difficult issues dont you all think? Because of this Vista, WD
cannot updates and we will not prone to any spyware that is attacking our
computer. Look like there is a need to look for third party software!

All my situation is also same as Halligang where I am not able to delete it
due to the message where Halligang had also posted! This indeed give me a
hard time. I will try Halligang manual update feature later and will keep you
all posted!

By the way, if you go to Microsoft Update; it will direct to Windows Update!
So no luck towards this too. Furthermore, I only have one update so far! I
dont have anymore needed updates in my Windows Update but shocked when
Halligang posted got more updates! I will try later again to update to see if
got luck with the update.

Do have some more opinions and comments so that this matter in Vista could
be resolve!

Please don't remove Vista to reinstall XP.
This is what happens:
1.Windows Vista has Defender integrated and is impossible to remove.
2.If with Vista you use Windows Live OneCare, Defender will always be
disabled or Stopped, because WLOC does its work. You can check this accessing
Services.
3.If you want to update Defender, first Start it in the Services and use the
About for update. Remember that if you use WLOC, it will disable Defender in
the next restart.
4.If you use XP without WLOC, you can install, remove, reinstall, and update
Defender as you wish.
5.If you use XP with Defender version 1.5 and above, and WLOC at the same
time, the Defender will be disabled by WLOC. So, that is why, if you use XP
and WLOC 1.5, remove Defender.
6.Remember that Defender version 1.5 is the one specifically designed for
Vista, and behaves the same in both XP and Vista.

This is all I know on the subject.

Hi Effain and everyone!

I just give it a try just now like disable all windows update etc and run
update on Windows Defender! To my shock; the program indeed update itself
with no problem! When I reactivate the windows update, it even had the eight
updates mention and I manage to install them!

There is indeed something wrong with Vista may be a conflict between Windows
Defender update and Windows Update! May be Microsoft should make a fix on
this issue!

If there anyone had a better resolution to this problem?

Hi all

After having the same update problems as many others it seems with Windows
Vista, I fell upon this thread after deciphering what different people have
advised I finally got it working. For anyone checking these forums the plain
english solution is :-

1. Turn of all Automatic updates using <start> <windows update> <change
Settings> use never check for updates then uncheck all ticked boxes.

2. Open windows defender and run Check for Updates

3. Reset all of the changes you made in Windows Update to their original
settings and then run update.

The above worked great for me so thank you for the Info.

Hi John;

Sorry for not posting my solution but I had found a better solution to Vista.

Because Windows Update integrate all Microsoft product into this Windows
Update; there is an option in the setting allowing you to "Check for updates"
for all Microsoft Products!"

Once this is check, then you click check for updates! You will notice that
you will begin receiving updates not only for Windows, but also the windows
defender. This ease the time of going to windows defender and manually check
for updates!

In other words, the Windows Update do everything without us opening each
program and check for updates!

Hi ChrisFoo

I just tried using the Microsoft update as you suggested but it seems that
this is what is causing the problem, when just using the windows update as in
the solution I described all went fine had a lot of updates to do etc. 14 of
which were Language packs which I decided not to install. When switching over
to Microsoft update these updates disappeared and again it went back to not
allowing defender to update again, Uncheck the Microsoft Update box and all
is well.

Maybe Microsoft can look into this issue???

Hallo!

Solution: Sratch the last point of Windows Update! All is running!
Update for Windows only!
Updates für weitere Produkte gilt für Server usw.

Hi John;

You may have been confused by my statement. Once you update your windows
update so that it can also update all other programs from Microsoft,
everything will be fine.

Now, once you have Microsoft Update, do not go to Windows Defender to
update! Go to Microsoft Update, then at the top have one function known as
"Check For Updates"! When updates are available, it will shows the required
update when you click "Available Update". I saw it that update is for Windows
Defender!

So I know that Microsoft Update will even update Windows Defender without
going to Windows Defender there and update!

Do try it

Would like to know what the Vista expert comes up with Bob.
I have a DELL XPS-M2010 one week out of the box - pre-installed with Vista
Ultimate and I have the same problem. Do you recon DELL are shipping black
market / UN-LICENSED software by any chance?
