Windows Defender won't update, even manually

I have windows defender on my laptop and it will not update the defenition.
The updates won't show up in Windows Update, updating through the program
says there is no updates available, but sill bugs me saying that the
defenition is out of date. The current installed defenition is from August
5. Going to the microsoft security portal website and downloading the
current 32 bits won't work either. When I right-click on the .exe and select
'Run as administrator' the extraction dialog box shows, but the update
doesn't actually install. Renaming the software distribution folder won't
work and my time is correct on my laptop. Thanks in advance for help.

XP or Vista?

Have you tried going to control panel, add or remove programs, Windows
Defender, and choosing repair?

If this is XP, I'd be inclined to recommend djlizards dial-a-fix. For
Vista, I'd try the "system update readiness tool for windows vista."

Thanks for the response bill, i tried the system update readiness tool, that
didn't fix it. What did work was installing the update manually in Clean
Boot with admin account.

As I think further on this, that's probably not good news. It indicates a
conflict of some kind between the update installation process and some bit
of third-party code that is normally running on your system. Since the
update in question was an anti-malware update, I wonder if you have other
anti-malware software running? It would be bad news if you had to disable
your antivirus to get Defender updated each time.

Hi all,

I am facing the same problem. I am using Vista, and the Error-code of the
Defender is: Code 0x80070005
I cannot get any help on the microsoft-page.
Is it possible, my firewall is blocking the updates? What can I do about it?

Thanks in advance for helping.
Cheers,
Ted

I don't think this one is characteristic of a firewall issue.

This looks more like an issue with WGA.

Here are some things to try.

1. Please open Internet Explorer and visit the following link to download
the WGA Diagnostic Tool:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012
2. Save the WGADiag2.exe file to Desktop, and then double click on the file
to run the tool.
After running the tool, please return to Windows Update and see if the issue
is resolved.

If that does not do the job, I'd go here:

http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/do...784005ae-2ebe-415e-9ec8-a597083783d3#ID0EFJAC

and hit the "validate Windows" button over on the right.

In general--test the validity of your Windows copy and look for options to
repair problems with the validation tools if you are certain your copy is
legit--(that is, of course, my assumption!)

Let me know if that helps, or elicits anything new in the way of errors.

What's the link to Microsoft? I can't find it even when I Google. I'm
running Vista 64bit, and my Defender has suddenly stopped updating, too. And
I cant' find it in "Add and Remove Programs to do a 'repair'.
