Windows Defender Sig. & Engine

Thanks Engel for the info. Any reason why MS is very erratic in its
update patches? Last time it was a delta update meaning an incremental
update (small file) and this time 2.7 mb file!

The timing isn't regular either. We had one on 15th, then 19th and now
on 25th.

Best regards,

Your most welcome ANONYMOUS,

I don't have a solid answer to the update issues at the moment, check it out
with someone closer to the scene, like Bill Sanderson, and really the
closers: Ravi Sathanur, Oren Shmuely, Steve Dodson, Mike Treit, Joe
Faulhaber, Mike Chan.

I am out of answers. Sorry I couldn't help.

I can't speak to the update issues you mention. This is a beta, and I
wouldn't expect consistency in timing, even in the best of times.

Thanks Engеl for publishing the link to the definition update file. I've only
a low speed internet access at home. So it's more comfortable for me to
download this file via my company's broadband access on a USB stick.

@ Microsoft:
Would be user friendly if Microsoft offered the update file not only for
automatic update but also for manually download. So long I hope Engеl will do
the job ...

Hello guys,

Happy Memorial Day.

Philip, Do you have automatic updates turned on--for Windows?

AutoUpdate--the native automatic update mode of Windows Defender uses the
BITS service.

This service is specifically designed, to minimize bandwidth impact.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/bits/bits/bits_start_page.asp

For a dialup user is just to ignore the update process--let the bits service
do its thing--dial in when you want, hang up when you want.

Bits should use unused bandwidth when it can, resume, etc, until it gets the
file in. (This is my setup)

You can test it next Monday or Tuesday with the next update.

I hope this post is helpful.

Sorry, forgot to add.

I quote Stu--a regular contributor here:

Start/Run
Type "services.msc"
Click "OK"

Please check the following are started:

1.Automatic Updates
2.Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)
3.Cryptographic Services
4.Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
5.System Restore Service

To verify that BITS is correctly configured :

1. Double-click `Background Intelligent Transfer Service.`
2. In the Startup type box, click Manual, and then Apply.
3. Click the `Log On` tab, and then verify that the service is enabled in
every hardware profile that you have listed. If the service is disabled in
one or more hardware profiles, click the hardware profile, Enable, and then
Apply.
4. Click the General tab and then Start.

If BITS starts successfully, visit the Windows Update Web site or the
Microsoft Update Web site to see if you can obtain updates. If it works OK,
change (2.) to automatic.
