Windows Defender for XP B2 DEC 31

Well, it seems like Windows XP users won't be getting the BETA 2 release of
Windows Defender anytime soon.

Microsoft said Windows Defender isn't a finished product. Vista testers are
likely to be the first to get their hands on the updated tool, a company
spokesperson said Monday. "We expect Windows Defender to appear in the next
Windows Vista Community Technology Preview release," expected by year's end,
the representative said.

It is unclear when Windows Defender will be available to Windows XP users.
Microsoft had planned to deliver a Beta 2 version of Windows AntiSpyware by
the end of the year. That release is expected to be the debut of Windows
Defender for Windows XP, but the delivery date might change, the Microsoft
spokesperson said.

"The timing for Beta 2 has not been determined. The internal goal for us is
Dec. 31, but that is flexible," the representative said.

This, a possible delay in beta2) was one of the possible "interpretations"
I'd considered behind the announcement of the name and the start of blogging
and added publicity. We'll see....

This ongoing uncertainty over dates is troubling. I don't give a stuff what
it is called, whether it's Defender, AntiSpyware or part of Microsoft Client
Protection, but I do need to have some idea when (or if) Microsoft will
release an AntiSpyware tool for XP that is not beta, that is properly
supported, and that can be managed on an Enterprise level.

I don't want to spend tens of thousands on a 3rd party product only to find
that something is released in the next 6 months. Please could we have some
firm release dates, even if they are only targets and are years away.
