An update is available for Windows Defender on Windows Vista
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931099

An update for Windows Defender on Windows Vista has been released. The
update corrects a problem in the functionality of Windows Defender malware
sample submission. This update applies only to Windows Defender version
1.1.1505.0 on Windows Vista. This problem does not occur in Windows Defender
version 1.1.1592.0. This problem also does not occur in later versions of
Windows Defender on Windows XP.

Thank you Bill S,

Since I'm checking this PC, I have set up the downloads to notify me.

I'm going to wait and see what happen or when.

Until then

Reading the KB, I understand this update have to be D/L manually, or I'm wrong?
Where is the update? It's not at the above page, nor in the
knowledge base.

Hi Engel;
Since it's Optional, that's what I'd understand out of that KB. There
should be no way that AU will install this for you unless you download and
initiate the installation. Sounds very similar to what we went through in
going from 1592 to 1593 under XP, although it's curious that they do refer
back to 1592 as not being a problem because that enhanced sample submission
capability was the reason given for going to 1593 back then. Perhaps it's
a problem under Vista but wasn't a problem under 1592 just an enhancement
in going to 1593. Curious wording anyway... :)

Pen;
I'd give it a few days... they gotta tell you about it before they
release it and thereby create mass craziness at least in this newsgroup...
Sometimes it takes a few days (at least) for code to get distributed out to
all the Update servers judging by our past experience.

Hi Dave M,

Thank you for your replay.

That is what I was thinking, only time will tell.

Dave, is your e-mail address how I should write it, or I have to delete some
letters in case I need some help or info about Vista and you can help me if
you have time.

Thanks again

Not sure how much Vista help I'll be, but send me an email at my current
address which I'll post since the account is disappearing very shortly and
I'll reply with an ongoing valid email... dpmo11er (at) juno (dot) com

I have not read it yet, but you are most likely correct. There are lots of
bug fixes which are never served up by any of the automated update
mechanisms, and this may well be one of them.

OK - now I HAVE read the article.

According to what I read, it is an optional update available via Windows
Update.

I don't have a Vista machine with Defender installed to test this with but I
may be able to check it later tonight.

Famous last words. Ok--now I have read it--this update is an optional
update, available via WindowsUpdate. Typically, such downloads are
eventually available via the download center as well, but I haven't been
able to find it there yet.

Whoops, the description is actually slightly incorrect - this is the same
issue that's in 1592, fixed in 1593. I'm checking on updating the KB text.
This took us a little bit longer to get the Vista fix through the release
process than the downlevel fix. ;)

And you of course only need this if you're opted into spynet.

Regards,
Joe

Thanks for clarifying that Joe... when it becomes available, this should
resolve all those questions that are sure to come up.
