http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931099

An update for Windows Defender on Windows Vista has been released. The
update corrects a problem in the functionality of Windows Defender malware
sample submission. This update applies only to Windows Defender version
1.1.1505.0 on Windows Vista. This problem does not occur in Windows Defender
version 1.1.1592.0. This problem also does not occur in later versions of
Windows Defender on Windows XP.

Of course this update will come automatically through the Windows Update

I am trying to install update on Outlook 2003 and it states an error has
occurred
while trying to download the "update". I do not know what to do ??

Yes, I heard. But, where can I download it. Microsoft Update does not offer
it (to my machine)?

Manual updates from Defender itself cannot be done anymore (error code:
0x80240029).

I discovered that my Defender was turned off. When I turned it on, it
needed any update. Upon trying to update the same error code 0x80240029 was
displayed. I opened IE as an administrator and went to
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931099, but there is no upgrade linkage
there. You can't install the Defender anew because it is part of Vista.
So, now I have a crippled Defender. Is there a doctor in the house? My
Defender is version 1.1.1505.0.

Excessive crossposting eliminated.

Is OneCare installed, William?

Microsoft has established separate newsgroups for Windows Defender support
and comments. This is not one of them.

I have tried downloading this file but I get a message from Vista saying
"this update does not apply to your system. I have double checked that my
windows defender IS the corrupt version, no 1.1.1505.0 Do you have any
solutions?

Are you sure that you downloaded the version for Vista, rather than XP?

Windows Defender came with Vista when I got the computer. I haven't
downloaded it from the net.

I don't understand - as quoted below you specifically said "I have tried
downloading this file". So, the question is, did you try downloading the
correct version of the file? What version of Vista are you running?
32-bit? 64-bit?

I have 32-bit Vista. I've tried downloading the update from the microsoft
website via the links somewhere in this forum, the update that supposedly
removes the problem. But this is the download or "update" for windows
defender that supposedly does not apply to my system. I have Defender, just
the"corrupted" version, and i've tried downloading the update to fix it, but
my computer won't let me. Hope this clears up any uncertainty.

I have tried downloading this file but I get a message from Vista saying
Was the file you downloaded named "Windows6.0-KB931099-x86.msu" ?

That error may indeed be telling you that the update was /already/ installed
via Automatic Updates! (IIRC, it was first being pushed via AU several
months ago.)

In any event, you'd be MUCH better off posting about this to one of the
Defender-specific newsgroups instead of the ones to which you've been
(somewhat excessively) crossposting. See
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/newsgroups/default.mspx
