Windows Defender Download Button opens Desktop window

I can't download Windows Defender. Every time I click on the download
button, a window showing the Desktop opens, and nothing more. Please help me
out.

Strange! Are you using Windows 2000 or XP SP2? What kind of firewall do you
have?

I've got SP2 and I'm using pre-Symantec-buyout Sygate.

I don't know enough about that specific firewall to know if it could be
blocking your download. Check your settings on the firewall. Also, it might
help to go through the steps for Genuine Windows Validation, just to make
sure that your browser is set up correctly and that the needed updates will
install.Then, go to Microsoft Update website and apply all critical updates
and any custom updates related to Internet access, such as .net framework
2.0. Defender requires all the current updates before it will download and
install.

D/L and install Ccleaner -

Note, uncheck Yahoos toolbar during install.

Open Ccleaner and start the cleaning, press "Windows" "Aplications" and "Run
Cleaner" from the menu choose 'Issues' and then press scan for issues, Repair
any fºund.

This sounds like there's some form of malfunction with Windows Genuine
advantage. There is, at the time the WGA control loads, a window which
opens--but for me it just disappears rather quickly.

I believe there's a troubleshooter. If this fails completely, I've also got
