Why is it that Windows Defender has never found a problem on my machine
whereas Ad-Aware (by Lavasoft) frequently finds threats which are 'critical'
?

Because Windows Defender is a beta and not ready for prime time?

Because all anti-spyware programs are far from perfect, and almost any one
will find threats that others may miss.

Note what Eric Howes, who has done extensive testing on Anti-Spyware
products, states

"No single anti-spyware scanner removes everything. Even the best-performing
anti-spyware scanner in these tests missed fully one quarter of the
"critical" files and Registry entries"

See http://spywarewarrior.com/asw-test-guide.htm

Plus the fact that Defender is a CRAP program
Like wise with me, It never finds any spyware yet all other spyware programs
I run, always find something.

I think spysweeper and spyware doctor are the best two going around, then
followed by spybot, ad-aware and crap cleaner

It's probably because M$ is the largest spyware company on Earth.
