I have Windows XP SP2 Home Edition. If I download Windows Defender, Malicious
Tool Remover, Lavasoft Ad-aware and use IE6 Firewall, is it necessary to also
purchase McAfee or Norton Security Software? Still learning!

Well, you still need a good antivirus program installed.

I would recommend trying Avast! antivirus.
I've been using it for over a year and its been great!
It's also FREE!
