Windows Critical Updates will not install

I cannot install any Windows Updates. I go through the
motions, scan for updates, review and install update. It
downloads updates but freezes on installing updates. ALL
updates. None will install. I've ran virus checks and
swept my system and all is OK; but I still cannot install
my critical patches. I am the administrator. Please help!
System restore does nothing either, so that's out of the
question. I'm not certain what's going on.

Windows Update: You should temporarily disable your antivirus software when
installing updates, as well as other security-type applications you may have
that interfere with the installation of software.

System Restore: What do you mean by "does nothing?" If you mean that you
cannot restore to an earlier restore point, you should know that restore
points do occasionally become corrupted. This is typically, but by no means
always, the result of an earlier virus infection. When a restore point
becomes corrupted all restore points are then unusable. This is for your
benefit: You wouldn't want to restore a corrupted restore point. If system
restore is unusable, for any reason, your only choice is to erase all
restore points and start again.

To erase all restore points: Turn off system restore on all drives, reboot,
turn system restore on again, and make a manual restore point. Back in
business.
