After installing a new HD as my second HD (a samsung 400GB) I could format it
and then copy plenty of files to it. I also created a paging file on the new
HD. However after the first reboot Windows crashes (it's not installed on
that HD). It doesn't crash if I remove the new HD. It also works just fine to
start windows if I start in safe mode with the new HD installed. It then also
works to copy and read files from the new HD. I removed the paging file in
the safe mode but doesn't help. The DMA access mode and chashing are present
even in safe mode so changing those shouldn't matter, I think.
I could mention that the motherboard (old VIA based MSI motherboard from
2002 I think) recognize the disk as 139 GB in the bios but it's formatted as
400 GB in WindowsXP SP2.
Anyone got a clue why it crashes or even what's different in safe mode as
far as HD disk access is concerned. No files or programs that should be run
at start up are on this disk, only a bunch of movies and mp3 files, unless of
course that paging file is still there even after I choose to have none on
that disk when I started it in safe mode.
