Windows Components are haunted

M

Me2Ewe

I still need some help here guys, I asked before but didn't get any answers
that worked so I am going to try again til it works I guess. I went to
hook-up IIS and I noticed in the Add/Remove Windows Components there are
these grey baseball diamond shapes with the check marks already checked. You
cannot take out the check mark either, the only one I can take the check out
of is Windows Messenger. They look the same as the hidden devices in Device
Manager like Non-Plug & Play Drives. Here is my Windows Components List:

þ Blank [Grey Diamond Shape]------------------------- 0.0MB

þ Blank [Grey Diamond Shape]------------------------- 56.8MB

þ Accessories & Utilities-------------------------------- 18.0MB

þ COM+--------------------------------------------------- 18.0MB

þ Distributed Transaction Coordinator---------------- 7.0MB

þ Fax Services-------------------------------------------- 3.8MB

þ Indexing Service--------------------------------------- 0.0MB

þ Internet Explorer--------------------------------------- 0.0MB

þ Internet Information Services------------------------- 13.5MB

þ Management & Monitoring Tools-------------------- 2.0MB

þ Media Center [Grey Diamond Shape]---------------- 0.0MB

þ Message Queing---------------------------------------- 0.0MB

¨ MSN Explorer------------------------------------------ 20.7MB

þ Networking Services----------------------------------- 0.3MB

¨ Other Networking File & Print Services------------- 0.0MB

þ Outlook Express---------------------------------------- 0.0MB

¨ Terminal Server---------------------------------------- 0.0MB

þ Update Root Certificates------------------------------ 0.0MB

þ Windows Media Player-------------------------------- 0.0MB

¨ Windows Messenger [Green man]------------------- 0.0MB

¨ Windows Messenger [Grey Diamond Shape]------- 14.3MB

þ WMI [Grey Diamond Shape]------------------------- 16.8MB

The ones with no bullets in front are not checked

Why do some show 0.0MB when they are being used like IE? Let me know if
there is some way to remove them and if I should be removing some of the
others [There are 5 grey shapes]

Wesley Vogel asked if I happen to modify the sysoc.inf? Like shown hereà
Remove un-wanted programs in XP www.mvps.org/ecvogel/kb/XP_remove_progs.htm

No I didn't modify it & It did not help either following this advice.

Thanks for any help

Respond to the thread you already started, or all you will likely get are
repeated suggestions of what you've already tried.

Okay I will try but nobody was answering for a few days so I figured they
gave up or couldn't see it anymore
How do you know when somebody's problem is solved?

And why is this a problem? I can make some suggestion, but I don't know
what replies you have already gotten.

For one, a grayed out box means that only some of the components in that
category are installed. Some items have a 0.00 MByte size listed because
removal only removes the program from the 'Start' list.

I have no idea why you see 'diamonds' rather than 'squares'. When you
reply, don't include the entire list, It does little to characterize your
problem, and your approach also precludes you finding a suitable search
string for Google.
Try something like
[ "Add/Remove Windows Components" gray diamond "Windows XP" ] .
Include the quotes, but not the brackets.

I would suggest that the checked, gray diamond indicates a Windows XP
component that cannot be removed (at least without doing some things that
will make you uncomfortable and which could cause big problems for your
system if done incorrectly.

Further, why not consider a router and Ethernet connections for your
computers if you have broadband. Routers with NAT and a DNS name server can
be had for $30 USD or so. This will allow any of your computers to use the
internet connection without requiring any others to be turned on. It also
works as a good incoming firewall.

For one thing, they are not "Greyed Out" like something that cannot be
changed like the computer name if you are in domain. It does not look like
that It is grey diamond with a black check in it and it is not for Windows
stuff either it does not look important. I am running DNS and a Router with
three computers. Therefore, no certain computer has to be on, what does that
have to do with the problem. The reason it is a problem is that there is
about 10 components that are sucking up a lot of juice. I am trying to
streamline it a bit and get rid of the stuff I do not need

No problem Thanks for taking the time for that 'prompt respectful' reply
I used to get some great answers & help from this newsgroup but as of late
the only help that seems to be offered is sarcasm 101. Not just for me
before the dramatic come backs come in from Phil & JohnJohn.
Its either talk over someone's head or sneer and drop their line from your
responses.
At least when you sign off people know that the next answers will be good

You really have to take more responsibility in posing your questions. Too
much irrelevant material can be nearly as bad as to little. Most people who
reply here put quite a bit of thought into diagnosis. You can't expect to
continue to get help when you continue to complain about attempts to help.
Before you post, carefully collect information about your problem, what you
have changed lately, and what you have done yourself to correct the problem.
Don't start new threads on the same problem. Show a little patience and
effort on your part. You've used up mine.

And, by the way, it was YOU that dropped the thread that YOU started, I
suppose because you were impatient.
