Can someone please reveal to me the location of the file which
contains the list of all command lines plus a brief help file for each
within XP Prof Edition. Somewhere it is there [used to have a shortcut on
Desktop] but I cannot find it.. Would appreciate any help [My eyesight plus
the rest of me is no longer age 25 or even close to it].

Create a shortcut on the desktop with a "Target" value of;
%systemroot%\hh.exe Ms-its:%systemroot%\help\ntcmds.chm::/ntcmds.htm

That's quite slick. How do you know the magic .htm name of a
particular page? I have one or two others I'd like to create
shortcuts to, but I don't know how to figure out the sub-names.

Search for *.chm in the
%systemroot%\Help
folder.

I don't know if this is the best answer to my question, but it's
_an_ answer: navigate in Microsoft's on-line help, such as

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/.../all/proddocs/en-us/ntcmds_shelloverview.mspx

The file name at the end (with .mspx changed to .htm) appears to
match the item in the Win XP help file. This shortcut:
%systemroot%\hh.exe Ms-its:%systemroot%\help\ntcmds.chm::/ntcmds_shelloverview.htm

does indeed take me to Windows Help's "Command Shell Overview"
topic, which lists the predefined environment variables.

But still I wonder if there's a more "official" way to set up these
shortcuts.

Which one?

Given any topic in Help and Support Center, how can I discover the
shortcut command to start it directly, without hitting Win+F1 and
navigating to that particular topic?

You've already given the shortcut for a particular topic; my
question is how to do it for any desired topic.

Doesn't work for all of them.
