Buddy

I have this box that keeps popping up on my screen, saying Windows Cardspace
has encountered a problem and needs to close.

I am running windows xp home version 2002 sp3
These are the error messages.

wer841b.dir00\infocard.exe.mdmp
wer841b.dir00\appcompat.txt

I have had a look in add/remove and have:-
Microsoft.net framework 1.1 - 1.1 hotfix (KB928366) - 2.0 SP2 - 3.0 SP2 -
3.5 SP1.

I have also looked in event viewer.
Says Errors in NET runtime 2.0
Errors in Application
Warning userenv - whatever these mean, I have no idea.

Could someone please help me, I'm getting frustrated.
Regards Buddy

Windows Cardspace probably was installed with one of the .NET updates. A
couple of years ago, there was a known bug in Cardspace with similar
symptoms to yours and the stated solution was to increase the size of
the event log or set it to "overwrite events as needed" (done from event
viewer by right clicking on a log and selecting properties).

I don't know if that bug ever got fixed or not. Or whether it's the
cause of your problem. However, a simpler solution might be to make sure
that the Windows Cardspace Service is not running. Start > services.msc
scroll down to "Windows Cardspace" and set the startup type to
"Disabled" or at least to "Manual".

Do you know what's calling Cardspace? Any program that uses a ".crd"
file extension could easily be the culprit since that's what Cardspace
uses.
I still use the old win98 Carfile program, which uses .crd files, and
one of the recent updates suddenly changed the file association for it
to Cardspace. I went to the Folders Option and changed the file
association back to Cardfile and all has been right since then.
I think it was pretty rude of MS to change associatiosn without
warning like that, but ... that's MS. NO idea which update it was.

HTH,

Twayne`
