I tried to copy some files onto a CD-RW disc. But when I go to copy, Windows
tells me that the disc is not writable. I've already deleted the files off
it on another computer prior to this attempt.

Probably a dumb question, but is your CD drive a writeable drive ?

If you are trying to save or drag and drop directly to CD, this is known as
packet writing and XP does not support that function natively. This
requires third party software such as the Direct CD component of Easy CD
Creator, www.roxio.com or the InCD component of Nero, www.nero.com.

Check the web sites for version compatibility with XP as well as compatible
CD-Writers.

See this link for a good overview of CD burning in XP by Alex Nichol:
