Windows can't read hard drive

During periods of inactivity, my Presario 6350 (P4 @ 2.4 GHz with WinXP home)
shuts-down (at least once a day; sometimes more often) and re-boots itself.
It does not happen when I am active. After re-boot, I get the message that
my computer has recovered from a serious problem: "Hard disk drive error
detected. Windows was temporarily unable to read your hard drive." and then
continues with some common causes but few recommendations. I have run Fix-it
Utilities 6: no HDproblems detected and HD is in good health. I have done
rountine maintenance (defragged HD, registry, etc.) but the computer still
shuts down.
Microsoft won't help. Anybody got any ideas? btw, the HD diagnostic
feature within Windows XP won't work. That's why I bought Fix-it.
Thanks,
AJ

The drive controller or drive may be failing. I'd download and run the
manufacturer's utilities from their web site.

Thanks Dave. When you mean "manufacturer" do you mean Compaq (now HP) or the
maker of the HD (AT)? I assume you meant HP so I will try to get a HD check
program from them.
Thanks again,
AJ

The hardware manufacturer. You may need to pop the lid to find this info.
The controller may be integrated into the mobo
