Slow Hard Drive Read/Write

In Device Manager, IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, the settings for
transfer rates are set to DMA if available, but the current mode is
listed as PIO. I tried the MS fix of changing to PIO mode then back to
DMA if available but the current mode remains PIO. I beieve this is
the cause of slow read/write speed of my hard drive as measured by
PCPitstop and the HD Tech utility.

I have WinXP SP2. The hard drive is a Western Digital WD2000JB. The
controller is Intel 82801DB Ultra ATA.

Can anyone help me get this hard drive/controller working in DMA mode?

Thanks, jimbo

All of those references were interesting, BUT what I discovered was an
Intel program called "Application Accelerator" that had been installed
when I was running Win98se and with a different hard drive was the
problem. I un-installed that program and my current mode changed to
Ultra DMA 5.

My speed has increased dramatically. Example: boot time has decreased
from 1 min 21 sec to 45 sec.

Thanks, jimbo

This is yet another reason for a drive reverting to PIO mode...
