Very slow copying to

Copying to one of my 3 HDs, J:, seems to be exceptionally slow. For
example, copying 2 files on drive N: total 6.13 GB, to drive J: I get
duration estimates as follows: 40 mins, 40, 43, 63, 49, 52, etc.
By contrast, copying same files to another similar gives 5 mins 5, 5,
5, 5, etc.

That partition is on a MAXTOR 200 GB HD, on the IDE Primary Slave
channel. I suspect the seriously poor speed is because somehow DMA has
got switched off, as seen here:

Although I have Device 1 set to 'DMA if Available', it is currently
using PIO mode.

I tried changing 'Transfer Mode' to PIO, rebooting, then changing back
again to 'DMA if Available', but no joy.

Can anyone help me get DMA back please?

Check the IDE cable is an 80 wire cable. Next check in the BIOS to make sure
DMA is on for the drive in question. Although newer devices should be able
to operate at different speeds sharing a IDE channel make sure. If possable
set the drive as master to see if it works. Once you sset the BIOS part
recheck windows as in you picture.

Thanks. Replaced cable with brand new one, and no change. There
doesn't appear to be any option to set DMA in BIOS.
