My friend's Compaq Presario can't connect to the Internet. It was
working fine yesterday. I ran AVG Free with updated virus definitions,
Spybot S&D version 1.4, and Ad-aware (don't know what version, but is
the latest). I checked and installed a new Ethernet card, but it
didn't work. I didn't try Safe Mode with Networking. Don't know if
it'll work. All my scans came up clean. Please help! Plus, cables and
hub are ok.

If you have installed SP2, try this: Start > Run and type in

cmd

there type

netsh winsock reset

and restart Windows.

Open a command prompt window and enter these two commands in the following
order:
1) ipconfig /release
2) ipconfig /renew

I suspected that it was a worm, but couldn't find it. But now, since I
tried reinstalling, I can't reinstall Windows! I came up with the error
4096 about an .exe file. Plus, when creating a Recovery Partition, it
just hangs!

Ok, now I think there's something wrong with the DVD drive. After all,
the computer is like, a year and a half old. The CD drive works fine.

Ok, after I finish this full Recovery, then it'll be fine! I'll ask
again if I need help.

Why are you asking for advice and then just randomly trying stuff and
ignoring the advice?

Sorry. I did the reformat right before you gave the advice. My HD was
screwed after that. Switched CD/DVD drives, then it worked.
