Since I switched from static IP on client, the client will disappearsworkgroup computers on both PC's after 15 minutes. The only way it that it
stays there is with static IP. The message in event manager on client says
that "the browser service failed to retrieve the backup list too many times
on transport \Device\NeBT-Tcpip (long string of letters and numbers here).
The backup browser is stopping."<<<<
x. That means the browser can not get thru the net from either side.
The host is the Master browser (in this case) and keeps the list. I. E. He
sees just himself and so the Client is dropped. The Client should be able to
see himself. If this is being dropped, that may indicate the net name is old
and when he can't get the list he doesn't have a net / link name.

and DCHP gets the IP, a refresh would then get out to the ISP.

the registry as well as that the connection type could not be determined

manually.<<<<
X1. The DSN list would not be available to IE while dialing, until after the
DHCP to the ISP. I don't know of a DSN list in the REG, that is usually part
of the connect info under Support TAB, show details?
X2. The connection TYPE event message is the DSS (discovery) trying to
determine the best and lowest cost net path (you could uncheck it in the NIC
properties.)
This is occurring because you are using NETBIOS over TCP/IP and DSS can't
see the embedded packet of NETBIOS inside the TCP/IP packet)
that says a program was running in Usernv when I logged off. I tried using
a profile program from MS to see what was not closing and it is one of the

just on the login screen--the same as with the Pro version. I click on the

and turned on on host PC since the article said to turn this off only on

difference and instead of having Messenger pop up on client when the client
first autodials when I first start up client PC--Messenger pops up on host
and logs in there.
I guess I could try uninstalling ICS with LAN turned on on client, but I
have tried that before on one of my many previous XP reinstalls. I have
been messing with this since January.<<<
x. This could be why the client is having troubles?
If the connection didn't say to get the ip and DSN automatically, then the
DHCPClient and DSNCLient software on the client PC may not be running and or
the ICS gateway may not have set up a DHCP / DSN server, which sure sounds
like what is happening.
x. You can always run the Netwizard on both machines again, with the
autodect setting on. (be connected to the ISP , too.)
