W32 Time Errors: Event Viewer IDs 17 and 29

E

eli

Hello:

I am seeing the following error messages in my Event Viewer:

Event ID 17 and Event ID 29.

Event ID 17 reads:

===========

"
Time Provider NtpClient: An error occurred during DNS lookup of the manually configured peer 'time.windows.com,0x1'. NtpClient will try the DNS lookup again in 15 minutes. The error was: A socket operation was attempted to an unreachable host. (0x80072751)"

==============

I sometimes need to reboot my Linksys router to restore the DSL connectivity. There is only one other PC on that router, and its time is the same as mine. When the connectivity is restored, I see both the above-mentioned error readings. Yet I dont see any reference in Evntviewer of another attempt at DNS Lookup after those 15 minutes expire.

I have tried manually synchronizing the time via Control Panel, but I keep getting an error reading. Generally , it doesnt state the anture of the error, but once it said something to the effect that:

""The peer's stratum is greater than the host's stratum"

or something to that effect.

Questions:

What is causing these error readings, and how might I remedy them?

If the time readings are corect, can I simply ignore these error messages?

Thanks in advance:

-Eli

I saw the same message as well as others while trying to get my new XP-MCE
laptop to synchronize for the last two days.

Several suggestions have been posted in the "Windows XP Media Center
Edition" newsgroup (do a search in that group for "time synchronization.")

The one that worked perfectly for me right away was to change the Internet
Time Sever to: "uk.pool.ntp.org" (w/o the quotes.)

It seems that there are problems with: "time.windows.com" and
"time.nist.gov" that are the two 'default' servers in the control panel.

Good Luck.

Thanks Jones, but I cant find any entries in that group under "time
synchronization" or W32 Time. Might this have been posted to a group other
than: "Windows XP Media Center " ?

I also dont see the option of using another InternetTime Server other than
those two u mentioned [time.windows.com" and "time.nist.gov"]

and which u say are yielding error messages.

Any further suggestions?

TIA

Eli,
I too have been having trouble syncing with the two default's that are in
WinXP. I found time.xmission.com will work for me. To add it, just double
click your clock in the Notification Area/Taskbar Tray. Then select the
Internet Time tab. Highlight either of the defaults by clicking next to it
and just type in the time server address you want. Finally, click "Apply" and
it will be added to your drop down list. (You won't loose the defaults, the
new one will be added to the list.)

Thanks Milt. Yes, time.xmission.com, did synchronize the time when I
manually updated vai Control Panel-->Date/Time.

Do you suppose it will synchronize automatically though when its time to do
so?

I believe that's in another week...

TIA

Eli,
Ask me in another week. Then we'll both know. I just did it a few days
ago myself. I figured, even if it didn't sync. automatically, I can do it
manually until they get the other servers working properly again.
