Windows cannot start after CHKDSK, which now does not run properly

This problem only recently began. Whenever I ran CHKDSK, Windows was unable
to restart Windows properly. It would bring up that screen stating "We
aplogize for the inconvenience, but Windows could not start successfully. A
recent hardware or software change might have caused this", and I would have
to choose the
"Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked) Start
Windows Normally" in order for Windows to start properly.

More recently, however, when I run CHKDSK, the entire process stalls on step
4 of 5 (verifying files, I think), at 57 percent complete. The computer
basically freezes; even the working light on the computer remains lit. I have
to turn off the computer, after which the first problem described above
occurs ("We apologize for the inconvenience", etc.) before Windows runs
properly.

This only began in the last month or so, at least, that's when I first
noticed it. The "inconvenience" message comes up even if I decide to skip the
scheduled CHKDSK process. I really hope someone can help me with this issue.

Have you downloaded and utilized the hard disk drive manufacturer's
diagnostic utilities?
Could be a bad hard disk drive.

Also - if you have anyway to do it (BartPE Boot CD, making an image of the
entire drive, etc) --> I suggest you backup your data from that drive *now*.

I'm not sure what you mean about the manufacturer's diagnostic utilities.
I've downloaded everything which eMachines has sent to me via BigFix. CHKDSK,
and Windows XP as a whole, came with the computer. They don't appear to offer
any diagnostic products that I can see.

As for backing up the hard drive, is BartPE the suggested program to use for
this? Exactly how does that program work: in the event of a failure, would
that be the boot disk I use in place of the one that came with the computer?

Yeah, needless to say, I'm very confused and very worried...

eMachine doesn't make hard drives. They use those manufactured by other
companies. It is the drive check utility from the "other" company that you
have to download and run to check your hard drive.

And no, I have no idea what type of hard drive is in your computer. You can
go here http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html and download Belarc
Advisor. You can then run the program and look under Drives. You will get an
indication of who made the drive.

1. WD=Western Digital
2. ST=Seagate Technologies

etc. Then go to the drive manufacturers home page and search out their
drive test utility.

Okay, I downloaded and utilized the Belarc Advisor, found the drive was
manufactured by Western Digital, and downloaded their Data LifeGuard
Diagnostics Tool. I ran both a a fast test and an extended test of the
physicial drive, and the Diagnostic gave it passing grades both times. So,
unless I have downloaded the wrong program, the hard drive seems to be
intact. However, I will also download their program "Data Lifeguard Tools
11.2 for Windows" and use that just to be on the safe side. Other programs
offered for download are the "Promise Ultra 100 TX2 Controller Card Driver"
and IRE RAID Compatibility Upgrades -- should I download those as well or are
they not needed for the current situation?

In other news, I believe I have resolved the issue of the computer freezing
when running the CHKDSK, but, at last check, Windows still fails to start
properly after running CHKDSK. Note, however, that there is no such issue
when running CHKDSK from Safe Mode (Windows restarts in Safe Mode without a
hitch). Sooo... what do I do now? :D
