XP doesnt starts normally after CHKDSK /f

G

Guest

Hi all,

I posted this request 5 days back; it seems no one in the world has a
solution to this problem. Anyone there who could please help me with this?

"I am using XP home (SP-2), kaspersky (antivirus) and MS Antispyware. HP
nx5000, 30GB, (2 partitions, both NTFS). When I run CHKDSK /f on drive 'C'
the chkdsk runs ok and reports no problems; but when it reboots (a page is
displayed with some text, which stays for fraction of a second) it goes to
the options page "Safe Mode, last good known......". If I select "Start
Windows Normally" it starts CHKDSK again and comes back on this page, if I
select "last good config..... " it boots ok.

XP starts normally if I dont run CHKDSK /f. I have disabled both the
softwares
and tried again but result is same. I even tried selective startup,
disabling all starting programs from "msconfig". The disk is checked and
reports no errors from 'tools', 'scan for and attempt recovery of bad
sectors'. SFC /scannow reports no errors either.

When I used WIN XP-e cd to boot and then ran CHKDSK /f, the drive is checked
and system boots normally.

Thanking in anticipation"

Select Start, Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Disk
Management. What is in the Status Column for Volume C?

Another suggestion. You might do well to download and install Everest
Home Edition. This
freeware programme is excellent for getting information about your
computer:
http://www.lavalys.hu/index.php

In Everest select Storage, Windows Storage and you will see details of
drives. Place the cursor on your hard drive and post the Device
Description for your Hard Drive.

There could also be Error Reports in Event Viewer (System tab ). Please
post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&Product=winxp

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report
complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the first paste
after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Gerry, thanks for replying... The status for volume 'C' in Disk Management
says "Healthy (system)".

There are MANY error and warning messages in 'Event Viewer'. I am pasting
three error messages and one warning message. There is one 'error' message
which is persistant and is shown many times (Error message 2); I think it
started coming when I downloaded a trial version of "System Mechanic" from
"iolo.com". I have uninstalled this software. I am pasting only the messages
that I thought would be of help for you. Hope these will help you make out
what the problem is...

Error 1

It's not absolutely but research leads computer games popular with the
Chinese. It could well be a registry entry left over after uninstalling
the game.

Error 2

As you say a left over from uninstalling Registry Mechanic.

Error 3

There are a number of reports mentioning this error but no fixes.
However, it is interesting that references a hard drive and your problem
following chkdsk.

Error 4
I do not think it is relevant to resolving the problem with your
startup.

I think that the reference in Disk management to the hard drive being
healthy may be concealing an underlying problem. Given the consequences
if your hard drive fails it could be important to test your hard drive.
Can you download Everest as I suggested and post details of your hard
drive.

I have another suggestion to make regarding Error 1 and Error 2. I
would download and install cCleaner
http://www.ccleaner.com/ccdownload.asp
http://www.ccleaner.com/

Once you have installed cCleaner create a new System Restore point.
http://bertk.mvps.org/html/createrp.html

Next start cCleaner and select the Issues tab and check all boxes.
Select scan and then check all boxes before the Issues identified and
click on Fix. If anything subsequently seems wrong you can always you
use the System Restore point to put the Registry back to what it was
before running cCleaner. Otherwise you need to proceed slowly with
cCleaner. Try out bits at a time to see how it works and what it does.

You are in a complicated Warranty situation. HP will have given their
own Warranties on the product. However, the parts manufacturer may have
given longer warranties. On some hard drives Toshiba give a 3 years
warranty. The complication is complicated further as you bought the
computer / hard drive in one country and now live in another. BTW in
which country are you living?

Some hard drive manufacturers offer an on-line service for testing but
so far as I was able to ascertain earlier Toshiba do not offer this
service. I have to stress that we do not know that the hard drive is
faulty but I do think you need to know whether the hard drive is still
covered by warranty and upon what basis HP / Toshiba might test it.

I live in Pakistan and I think I can check if the hard drive is still
covered by the gurantee and how (and if) HP/Toshiba will test it.

But to tell you the truth, I still dont get it how and what makes u feel
suspicious about the physical status of the hard drive?

Can you tell me a way to read what is written on the screen, which stays for
a fraction of a second before system reboots. I think it would make things
easier for you and me. I tried scroll lock, pause, break... It doesnt stops
and goes away just showing something is written in blue on a black screen.

Check that you have a boot disk or Windows XP CD in the event of any
problems.

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should
help by allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Right click
on the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties, Advanced,
StartUp and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck box before
Automatically Restart.

Enable automatic restart on system failure after you have captured /
copied and pasted the message in a further post here.

At page 61 of the Maintenance Manual there is reference to Self Testing
the Hard Drive as an Option of the Tools Menu. I am not sure whether
this is a Third Party or Microsoft provided Tool.

Gerry,

I have already tested the HDD (through 'self testing' of BIOS). It reported
no errors.

I am keeping the start up (bootable) CD handy, provided with the system. But
I would prefer to remove all hardware and software one by one and perform
CHKDSK after each removal or uninstall, to look for my culprit. If I am able
to find it i will inform you posting a message for you to help anyone else in
future or any other reader who also has same problem. Otherwise I WILL HAVE
TO TAKE THE SOUR PILL AND GO FOR FORMAT. I will run 'ccleaner' and 'registry
mechanic' after each removal or uninstall. It will take LOT of time, but I
dont want to give up to a machine that easily. If you have a better
suggestion I would like to opt for that too.

Thanks for the tip for reading the message on the 'stop screen' of CHKDSK.
The message reads something like this;

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent
damage to your computer.

SESSION5_INITIALIZATION_FAILED

If this is first time you have seen this stop error screen, restart your
computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If
this is new installation ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any
windows updates.

If problem continues, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or
software. Disable BIOS memory option such as caching or shadowing.

Restart in safe mode by
............................................................etc etc

I will wait for your suggestion(s) before proceeding with the uninstall of
drivers and softwares on my machine.

Thanks

That Stop Error Message is very helpful but it does leave a number
avenues to explore.

The particular Stop message is part of a Group of Stop messages, which
might indicate a problem with outdated firmware, corrupted system
files, or an incompatible HAL type. The error is occurring during a boot
phase when interrupts are enabled and the remaining Windows executive
components, including device drivers, are initialised. In addition, the
remaining CPUs in multiprocessor systems are initialised.

You might try System Restore:
How to restore the operating system to a previous state in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306084/

Pick a Restore Point dated immediately before you think the problem
started. Please note you will lose good changes made since that date and
will need to redo them. List them before restoring so you have the
necessary information to carry them out.

http://bertk.mvps.org/html/tips.html#WhatsRestored
http://bertk.mvps.org/html/healthy.html

I have been testing HD Tune. (freeware). Download and run it see and see
what it turns up.

Gerry,

I think we fixed the problem. It was Kaspersky (antivirus) not allowing the
system to proceed with normal boot after the chkdsk with /F switch.

Restoring the system to a back date: I had written above that I installed
"System Mechanic" trial version downloaded from www.iolo.com, what this
program did was it deleted all my "restore points" before the date it was
installed. I only noticed this when I tried to run chkdsk on Nov. 1st. The
first thing I tried was to restore the system to a back date but there were
no restore points.

I had downloaded couple of updates for sofwares and drivers in the past
month, I uninstalled all the programs whose updates were installed and had to
uninstall the devices whose updated drivers were installed. Nothing helped. I
removed kaspersky (KAV) and ran chkdsk again. The system booted perfect; no
problems, no stop screens, no startup options. To be sure KAV was the
culprit, I again installed it on my system and ran chkdsk with /F switch
again. To my surprise the system boots normal this time. I downloaded the
updates of the KAV and again run chkdsk twice, the system seemed to be
booting normal. I dont get it. ONE more thing; After I installed KAV (had not
downloaded updates, yet) XP stopped responding on the main screen after
booting up and bringing all icons on DT and system tray. Had to switch off
the system manually. It could be because of ccleaner, as I ran it from
"Clean" without unchecking any options.

I think before I re-install the programs I have uninstalled I should wait
for couple of days and check the behavior of KAV and XP. I still havent
written off "a physical problem with the HDD"... Now that the system seems to
be operating normal I used CHKDSK command with /R and /X switches it didnt
report any problems and rebooted ok too.
