"Windows cannot open this file"

Today I downloaded from the Corel website a WordPerfect patch for my Windows
XP SP3 computers (two of them). When I tried to install the patch, I
received the following Windows error message on both computers: "Windows
cannot open this file. To open this file, Windows needs to know what program
created it..." I checkmarked the option that Windows use the Web service to
find the appropriate program, but it said it couldn't find one. The file is
WPOX3_SP2_HotPatch4_EN.msp. The type is Claris.MainDictionary, 5.44 MB.

I asked at the WPX3 newsgroup and was told I shouldn't have a problem
installing this patch.

Any idea of what program I should have to open the file or what I should do
if that's not the real issue?

Thanks much!

Ah, Corel and their MSP patches. I think I remember that I solved this
by doing a right-click on the file, choosing Open With, and choosing
the Microsoft Installer. If it's not in the ready list, you may have
to browse in C:\Windows or a sub folder for msiexec.exe. If it doesn't
help, you may want to go and grab and install the new Windows
Installer 4.5, reboot, and try the patch again. Available here:

Let me know how it goes.

Thank you!!! After right-clicking and choosing Open With, all I got was the
same stuff as before: "Windows cannot open this file." I checked the
available extensions in Control Panel, Folder Options, and found MSP as MSP
File. I knew I had the Windows Installer program, but clearly it wasn't
working here.

At that point, I downloaded and installed the newer version of Windows
Installer on both computers. And YES, the WP patch ran. I don't understand
it, but I'm very happy it worked. Thank you again!

And there was much rejoicing. Glad it worked.
