Windows Boot

I am not sure this is actually a Windows Vista issue, since it started when I
was running XP, but since I am running Vista now I will post here.

Every time I boot a screen comes up saying it is the Window Boot Manager.

The screen says:

Windows Failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the
cause. To fix the problem:

1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer.
2. Choose your language settings, and then click "Next".
3. Click "Repair your computer"

If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer
manufacturer for assistance.

File: \windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
Status: 0xc000428
Info: Windows cannot verify the digital signature for this file.

The options I have are Enter=Continue or ESC=Exit.

This happens every time I boot.

Usually after hitting "Enter" it will go to the boot options screen and I
usually just select to start normally, I have tried to select all the other
options but no difference. Sometimes the "Windows Boot Manager" will come
back up several times and then it will finally boot into Windows. Sometimes
the file will be "File: \windows\system32\winload.exe".

I loaded Windows Vista RC1 assuming that somehow my XP got screwed up and it
was a good "reason" to load Vista. :) But that did not solve the problem.

Any suggestions would be great!!!!!

Thanks!!!!

Try installing the other way around. Install XP first, then Vista.
I am assuming you are installing the OSes on seperate partitions.

A 64 bit version requires signed or certified drivers - period - which means
many drivers accepted by the 32 bit version will not function via 64 bit..

My understanding is that as long as that switch is set in the BCD, unsigned
drivers will always install and work. The catch is that if you enable it
again, the drivers will not work.

Since you know what the problem isn't you should be able to figure out what
the problem is. Good luck.

I just completed a brand new build yesterday and, after playing around
with just the os installed (Vista Home Prem 64bit SP1), I installed the
various drivers. The computer asked for a restart so I did. It came up
with the black screen and "Windows failed to
start....File:|Windows\System32\drivers\sfsync04.sys, Status:
0xc0000428, Info: Windows cannot verify the digital signature for this
file."

If you Google "sfsync04.sys" you find that it is copy protection software
for movies/games. You also find a lot of people having problems with it.
Whether you have a problem or not depends on the version you are running.

Out of the box Vista is stable as evidenced by your install. However, Vista
or any other OS for that matter will fall over in some way if the third party
drivers cause it to. I can't remember the exact number, but either 33% or 60%
of Vista blue screens are caused by nVidia drivers. And don't get me started
on Dell...

I hope this helps. It is a guess as there isn't a lot of information to go on.
