Windows Backup

I made a backup image of my C: drive on April 11, 2007, using Norton Ghost
9.0, and placed it on an external drive. I made a backup of My Documents, on
June 18, 2007, using Windows Backup Utility, which I had recently installed,
and placed it on the external drive. The latter backup included virtually
everything I had done on my computer from April 11 to June 18. On June 20, I
had a problem with my computer that I could not solve. I used Norton Ghost
to return my C: drive to where it was on April 11. I then reinstalled
Windows Backup Utility and attempted to restore the backup of My Documents.
The newly installed Backup Utility did not recognize the My Documents folder,
which had previously been placed on the external drive. I cannot open the
folder on the external drive designated as Backup.bkf. Does anyone know how
I can recover the material in Backup.bkf and bring My Documents folder up to
date?

Hi Robert.

When you click on the Backup.bkf file on the drive, do you get any error
message concerning "Unrecognized Media"?

You're post is a bit unclear with respect to the problem with restoring form
the backup created by Ntbackup.

When the backup was created did you have the verify option set?

What is the name of the backup file that was created, and where is it
located? In what folder? What is this "My Documents" folder you state the
backup utility does not recognize? Then you say you cannot open the folder
designated backup.bkf. But that is a file, not a folder.

So from the beginning. What is the backup file called, where is it located,
what steps are you taking to restore from this backup file? What exact
error messages are there?

I know from experience working with some of my own backups that any contents
in the backup set might require me to take ownership of its files and
folders contained inside - but thats once they've been restored to the
drive.

I have never heard of having to take ownership of the Backup.bkf itself - in
order to do a restore operation.

To clarify my problem: When I made the backup image of my C: drive on April
11, Windows Backup Utility was not on my computer. I installed it just prior
to making a backup of C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents on June
18. When I made the backup, I selected the “Verify†option. I placed this on
an external drive, H: drive, which is the same drive that contained the
backup image of my C: drive. The restoration of the C: drive had no affect
on the H: drive. After the restoration of the C: drive, I reinstalled the
Backup Utility. This apparently means that the Utility now on my computer has
no knowledge or means of referencing the Backup folder that was created on
June 18. That folder is H:\Backup Utility\Backup.bkf
When I open the Backup Utility, go to Advanced Mode, then Restore and Manage
Media tab, nothing is shown that can be restored. When I go to H:\Backup
Utility\Backup.bkf and click on the folder or file I get a message that “this
file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action…â€
When I right-click it, I get a message that “Windows cannot open this file…â€
I sincerely hope this clarifies matters, and that someone can help me.

My previous statements are now immaterial. I created a new backup with
Windows Backup Utility. I then opened the Restore tab and it listed the 6/18
backup and the 7/21 backup. I selected the folders in the 6/18 backup for
restoration. After performing the restoration, I found that the 7/21 backup
had been restored and the 6/18 backup no longer appeared on the H: drive. My
problem now is not how to open the 6/18 backup that was on the H: drive, but
how to recover the items it contained from the external H: drive. does anyone
have any suggestions?

The items you backed up - were restored to your "my documents" folder
then? I'm just trying to clarify this.

If you click on a any file or folder are you getting an "access denied"
message?

Robert,

After some thought... lets try this: re-open backup, go back into the
Restore tab.

Right click on "file" at the top, Select "catalog" and navigate to Drive H:
to select a backup file set you want to use. If both your backups are
listed there, try double clicking on the 6/18 backup set, and see if there
is an error message associated with attempting to open it.

In the case there is only one file listed on the drive, are you sure you
didn't backup 7-21 ontop of the backup set you already had for 6/18 in the
drive? (were both named backup.bkf?) Click on [+] if one is present next to
the catalog file and see if there are two entries contained inside that
backup set; one for 6/18 and a 2nd for 7/21.

Let us know.
