OK here's what I want to do. I've got 2 Toshiba laptops and I want to get a DeskStation V to also
use them as desktop components.

My question, if I have a DVD R/W internal HD and 2 external HD's, am I likely to run into trouble
with the activation and the WPA files?

Three separate computers, three separate licenses; why should there be
any activation problems? Each computer will have its own copies of the
wpa.* files.

The DeskStation is not a separate computer, it's a docking station (plugin component for the
laptops) that contains additional devices. In my case a DVD R/W and 3 hard drives, exceeding the
allowed 3 components every time I insert the laptop. Hence my question.

Ah! That shows how long it's been since I seriously looked at IBM
computers. ;-}

I wouldn't expect it to be an issue, as docking stations aren't
unknown. And while the docking station may contain additional devices,
none of them (as they're all storage devices) would have any significant
impact on the activation "vote." After all, people add and remove USB
drives all the time, without a problem. Does the docking station have a
network card built-in? That might have an effect.

Also, WinXP does support different hardware profiles, so it should be a
simple matter to create "docked" and "undocked" hardware profiles.

Yes it does.

So each profile would have it's own WPA files? ( I'm not sure what these things are except they have
something to do with activation and changing your hardware).

Would each profile be active automatically or would I have to do something each time the laptop is
docked?

Yes I need the "For Dummies books".

No, but each profile would load a different set of device drivers, if
necessary.

Would each profile be active automatically or would I have to do something each time the laptop is
docked?

You'd be offered the choice of which hardware profile to use each time
you boot the computer.
