Xferring Data From a Failed Laptop to My Desktop

I

Irish

My laptop's power supply has failed and I have a full battery remaining. I
don't want to replace it until Win 7 arrives and don't want to repair it.

My desktop's documents, Outlook contacts/calendar and Firefox add-ons and
bookmarks are outdated. Both computers use Win XP Home. My laptop has a 40G
HD only 35% full and I've just purchased a 320G external HD.

What is the most efficient way to update my desktop's documents and
settings before my laptop battery dies? Should I try to copy the entire
laptop HD to the external HD and would I have enough battery to do that or
need I copy only documents and settings? Both drives are 5400 rpm.

I hope that's enough information for support and appreciate replies. Thanks

Move all your personal files (documents, photos, etc.) to the external
hard drive. That's the easy part.

Next up: Outlook. You don't say what version(s) of Outlook you have. In
general, Outlook makes it easy to move to a new computer since
everything is stored in your data (pst)files. Check your Help files for
instructions on importing and exporting data files.

Mozilla probably has an add-on that backs up and restores you add-ons.
But, seriously, just make a list of them and reinstall them on the new
computer. Follow Firefox's instructions for exporting and importing your
bookmarks.

I have a very old laptop whose battery failed a long time ago that I still
use by keeping it plugged it...can yours not do this??
this would give you more time for the transfer

You can always take the HDD out of the notebook and put it in your desktop,
then hook up your external HDD and copy it all to it.

Are you looking to get a larger HDD after replacing the power supply
(internal or external)? If so, create the Ultimate Boot CD (start here
http://www.ubcd4win.com/howto.htm), run Drive Image XML, and back up your
notebook HDD to your external HDD. Then when you get the new PS and HDD, you
can boot the notebook from the UBCD and re-image the new HDD the same as the
old one. With Drive Image, the drives don't have to be the same size.
