Windows Activation after hard disk changed

I found this outstanding explanation of Windows XP activation...
http://aumha.org/win5/a/wpa.htm

I have a question regarding my current situation after changing the hard drive and restoring windows from a Drive Image
partition backup.

The above page says...
"The disk drive and partition recorded will be the ones that the system has found first when doing initial activation..."

No I have a hard drive vol that does not match the one when I first installed Windows. I think that means that the vote
for that hard drive is lost forever. Is that correct?

I similar situation seems to exist with the Ethernet connection. Originally the motherboard LAN was used. Do to
failure, a PCI network card is now used. Have I lost the Ethernet vote forever?

I ask because I keep running into occasional reactivation requirements. It's always at a really bad time.

I know that article & its excellently presented

A knew HDD has a different serial number therefore its different. If you
have an original COA for your install then use activate via telephone & do
it that way - simple

Thanks.
Activation works, it's just that I am required to activate too often, and I don't know why. My guess is that the vote
for the hard drive is forever lost. Likewise for the Ethernet adapter.

It doesn't seem to matter what I change, I get activation required when I shouldn't. I think it's because I swap out
hardware as troubleshooting procedures to determine if hardware from another machine is still properly functional.

I found that excellent activation page because of searching for an explanation. If I had known about all those things
before I upgraded my hard drive, and before installing an Ethernet adapter, I could have avoided losing the hard drive
vote, but I don't think I could have avoided losing the Ethernet vote.

It would be neat to have a tool that displays the votes, and to know how to restore a lost vote.

Wow!
Thanks for that.

According to that tool, the only thing that is still the same is the processor and the video adapter. That's nearly all
true...
but it creates more questions in my mind.

It's quite likely that I am mis-interpreting the results. Based on the description in the ReadMe.txt, this is what I
observe:

It looks to me like I am so different that it is a miracle that I am still allowed to activate.

The changes have been across long periods of time. This suggests that a major vote once lost can never be restored. If
that is true, then it is never okay to upgrade, and upgrade, and upgrade infinitum.

And in my situation, it's not okay to keep swapping out, back and forth on some items to facilitate trouble-shooting
hardware.

If calling in and getting a new activation code resets votes, then I am interpreting wrong. I guess understanding what
happens in WPA when I reactivate is the information I am missing.

If you're swapping hardware constantly, you may very well have to phone
activate. Just tell them the truth and you should have no problems. Or,
if you prefer to have a for sure phone activation, just tell them you
installed IE7 and it screwed up your computer. HAHAHAHAHA!
